Let's Pop Up Like Daisies Tue!

Tomorrow we must pop up like daisies and flood the poles with votes for the Republican ticket -- the entire ticket.

Vincent Sheheen has absolutely nothing to offer South Carolina. I heard him speak at the Columbia Rotary Club on October 11 (video available at http://www.columbiarotaryclub.org/ -- click on Meetings). He said several times that he would not raise our taxes, then proceeded to explain how he would spend money SC does not have to improve our economic situation. Everything he had to say began and ended with a government program. He cannot possibly implement his agenda without raising taxes. The man is absolutely giddy about his role in bringing stimulus money to SC -- money we will have to tax ourselves heavily to pay back. Vincent Sheheen is a typical Democrat with a typical tax-and-spend agenda. Worse, he supports Obama policies and will not lift a finger to defend our state's rights against federal encroachment.

Nikki Haley (who spoke to the club October 18) understands that the private sector, and specifically small businesses, provide the bulk of the jobs in SC. She proposes to nurture the business environment through tax reform and regulatory reform to make SC attractive to businesses of all sizes. Her plan begins with the private sector, and includes supportive government policies. She will also seek to reduce the size of government and make it more efficient.

The choice could not be more clear, and I urge all of you to disregard the clever Dem marketing that attempts to drive a wedge between Haley and business conservatives. One more telling indicator: a trial lawyer like Sheheen is trained to discredit his opponent if the case cannot be won on its merits. Indeed, that is precisely what he has tried to do to Haley in every possible way and at every possible turn. Have you seen any commercials touting his ideas? I have not; all just throw garbage at Haley.

This election will determine the future of SC for a generation; with fiscal solvency and re-districting imminent, we MUST elect Republicans to all the constitutional offices, including governor.

The Democratic Perspective On Sheri Few

Today's State Metro section has an article contrasting Sheri Few's views on education with those of her opponent Mia Butler.  Most of the article centers around school vouchers.  Predictably the Democrat is against relinquishing any government control; Sheri believes allowing money to go with each child, and allowing parents to determine where to enroll their child, would force failing schools to become better.

Giving people choice and control over their lives is what the Richland GOP is all about (Oh my gosh, society as the Democrats know it would end!).

There was a most interesting quote from Boyd Summers, Richland County Democratic Party Chairman (The State, in true unbiased fashion, did not even bother to ask me for a comment).  He said, "From a Democratic perspective, Sheri Few is very much outside of the mainstream."  Good for her!

According to the current myopic Democrat view of the world, the thinking of most voters in Richland County is outside the mainstream.  (Note to Boyd: if your thinking is in the minority, you are no longer the mainstream!)  Are Richland County voters just scared and not thinking straight, as President Obama stated recently?  Come on Boyd, if you are going to say stuff, at least say stuff that makes sense!

The Penny Sales Tax Increase: Do County Council Democrats Have Any Cents?

The Richland GOP stands for fiscal responsibility and efficient government; this proposed sales tax increase fails both of those standards.

Any economist will say that government should not raise taxes during time of recession. Period. Ronald Reagan believed that the only way to limit the size of government is to deny it funding. We have been fuming over government spending at all levels for the last two years, and now we have a chance to directly vote on and stop an ill-advised and ill-timed referendum that is ultimately designed to create a huge pot of money for Richland County Council to spend any way it wants.

There is no firm plan on how the money is to be spent, and what plans there are can be changed at any time by Council. This is not fiscally responsible government.

Richland County government has been steadily expanding for the last decade, yet I have not felt a corresponding increase in service; have you? The Council has shown itself incapable of fostering efficiency. In a time when the private sector and Richland County families have learned to do more with less, Richland County government has learned only to ask for more.

The bus system, if it is to exist, must be made to stand on its own. The time for soaking the taxpayers for the good of the few (the very few in this case) is long past. Columbia is too small a municipality to support a bus system; it would actually be cheaper to buy each of the riders a car and pay for gas, insurance, and maintenance, than it is to run the buses.  The talk of expanding this money pit with a sales tax increase is insane; if one is in a hole and wants to get out, the first thing one should do is stop digging.

I urge you to join me in supporting fiscally responsible and efficient government by voting AGAINST the sales tax increase (Question 1) and AGAINST the issuance of $200,000,000 (!) in bonds payable from the tax (Question 2).

My Remarks at the March 22, 2010 Richland GOP Executive Committee Meeting

Last April, when I was elected, I mentioned that we are in a battle for the soul of this country. Any who then thought that statement was hyperbole should now be dispelled of that view.

Since my April speech, Obama’s Democrats have worked hard to dismantle this country brick by brick, and now they have essentially nationalized yet another large chunk of our economy. Speaker Pelosi, with amazing arrogance, said “This is for the people!” even though the “people” she claims to serve have protested loudly for months that they want no part of Obamacare.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, our state legislature busies itself deciding which taxes to raise so we “little people” can subsidize a shopping mall in Jasper County and a PGA golf tournament in Hilton Head.

On a more local note, a candidate’s staffer walked into our office and haughtily said that a neighboring county delivers the filing forms to their office, and was just put out that she had to pick up the forms from us. Most of our elected officials have forgotten who they work for, and we need to remind them.

Fellow Republicans, the way to fight these excesses of power, and prevent future abuses, is to strengthen our Richland County party. Your party needs funds, volunteers, and candidates! The time to step forward and redouble our efforts is NOW!

Get your friends and neighbors involved! The more people we have working together for victory, the easier it will be for your party to insist upon change at all levels of government.

Richland GOP Headquarters Grand Opening

The following are my remarks made at the Grand Opening of the Richland County GOP Headquarters earlier today:

Fellow Citizens and Republicans, President Obama and his numerous czars ignore the Constitution and attempt to enact through executive order what they can no longer get done in Congress. His followers even now fan out across SC to try to turn this great state blue. His allies in the SC Legislature seek to weaken our Constitutional rights as individuals and as a state.

Our facility is a much-needed refuge for Richland County citizens who believe in freedom and responsibility. Today we ask all Richland County voters who believe a small, fiscally prudent government is in our county’s best interests, to join us! Today we ask all Richland County voters who want to make clear their elected officials work for them, and not the other way around, to join us! Today we ask all Richland County voters who believe that responsibilities not granted to the federal government in the Constitution must remain with us here in SC, to join us!

Today I say to these voters, you have a home! Join us to support candidates who believe in, and who will vote to advance, conservative ideas!

Let this headquarters stand as a stark, visible reminder to the likes of Anton Gunn, an Obama acolyte running for the SC House; and Joel Lourie and John Scott, who both recently voted against re-affirming our state’s rights; and the Democrats on Richland County Council, who consistently vote to raise taxes and expand government; and the liberals on Columbia City Council, who do the same; that the voters of Richland County are awake and watching! Today we send a message: We will no longer allow you to ignore us! We will vigorously oppose your irresponsible actions, actions that are contrary to the interests of your constituents! And we will work ceaselessly to end your political careers!

Thank you for coming today; now let’s get busy!

Richland GOP Convention

I want to thank all the stalwart Republicans who elected me Chairman today!

I look forward to exposing the disastrous plans that the Democrats have for Richland County, South Carolina, and the nation. I am also eager to help you derail those plans and elect Republicans who will work toward real solutions.

Let's get started now! I have lots of productive things that need doing. Contact me now to get involved!

In case you missed my acceptance speech, here it is:

I am honored, and excited, that you have selected me to be your chairman!

I want to thank Lou Nolan for her leadership; Crawford Clarkson, Wanda Forbes, Reverend Slimp, and Dolly Wells for their help with my campaign; Rusty DePass for his advice, and the numerous Republicans who endorsed me.

I would also like to thank my wife and family for putting up with me during the campaign.

I look forward to competing with the Democrats for the soul of this country!

Everyone I have talked to about the economy, whether Republican, Democrat, or Independent, is afraid.

President Obama, or as he is affectionately known in my household, Comrade Obama, is frightening Americans into believing that capitalism does not work.

President Obama says that he has a plan to lead us out of the mess caused by greedy capitalists.

President Obama says the government must heavily regulate the financial sector, so he has compounded Paulson’s panicked errors, forced any bank of significant size to accept government funds, and has taken large equity positions in some.

President Obama says the government must save corporations whose failure would put undue hardship on the American worker, so he has given huge sums of government money to General Motors and Chrysler, and told General Motors to fire its CEO.

President Obama says the government must make sure that the wealthy pay their fair share, and the poor get a rebate, so he will raise taxes on anyone he decides is too wealthy and distribute their wealth to those who do not pay taxes.

President Obama says the government must promote fairness in the media, so he seeks to muzzle conservative talk radio because liberals do not like the topics discussed.

President Obama’s plan is not original. I recently re-read a publication that I would like to quote a few snippets from. This publication advocates the following:

The “centralization of credit in the banks of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly.”

The “extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state…in accordance with a common plan.”

“A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.”

The “centralization of the means of communication…in the hands of the state.”

This plan was put forth in 1848 and was authored by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels; it is titled The Communist Manifesto, and it has been proven by history to be a disastrous plan.

Today, I ask your help. We must work together to inspire the citizens of Richland county to reject President Obama’s plan! Together, we must defeat the Democrats and prevent them leading our great nation into ruin!

I can promise you it will be hard work, and sometimes thankless work, but in building our party and promoting our principles, you are also securing the future of your children and grandchildren – and their future is worth every drop of sweat we expend today!

Thank you for your support!

Economic Stimulus?

Given the economic pain all Americans have felt these past few months, and the results of the general election, many liberals (including liberal journalists) are preaching that capitialism in general, and businesses large and small in particular, are somehow responsible for the mess. They say that business leaders cannot be trusted to grow the economy, and that Government (read any governmental body run by Democrats) is the answer to all our economic ills.

Democrats are using the current economic weakness as an excuse to implement a time-honored agenda: tax (anyone that makes money) and spend as they see fit. You can see it clearly in their "stimulus" plan that tweaks the US tax code to provide a check to people who do not pay taxes. In prior years, this sort of thing was labeled "welfare" and was a separate wealth-transfer program; now it will be part of the tax code and called a "rebate."

Democrats would deny it, but it was Karl Marx that first came up with the idea ("...from each according to his ability, to each according to his need...") in the nineteenth century. This is but one of the socialist concepts embedded in the Democratic agenda.

The alleged intent of the plan is to stimulate the economy; however it is a fundamental error in judgment to equate spending with investment. An investment gives a return, a future benefit; spending does not necessarily. The real effect of this plan will be to put the majority (57% is the figure I have heard) of Americans on welfare, to enlarge and solidify the Democrats' voter base (who would vote against paying no taxes and yet receiving a check?). So, perhaps from the Democrats' point of view, it is an investment after all!

We Republicans should remind Americans that capitalism is still the most efficient wealth-building system ever invented, and that free enterprise with minimal regulation is the engine that will most quickly replace the wealth lost in recent events. The US has never taxed or borrowed its way out of a recession (or a depression). Government-issued checks have never solved an economic crisis, from the first time it was tried in 1933 right up through today. Government has never successfully grown an economy (ask the Soviets -- wait, they collapsed in economic ruin...). Only businesses can be trusted to grow an economy. What do you think?
